Winning entry - 'Best Other Media'

2012 'Inspirational Landcare Celebration - 25 years'

Bass Coast Landcare Network

‘StringyBark’ is a collage of paper strips from ordinary and everyday magazines, layered, transformed and reformed back to their original state, in an attempt to depict the enduring quality of the Australian bush. Inspired by the last stanza in Mike Cleeland’s poem ‘The Landcare Seedling’- ‘and then through the seasons, the seed blew far and wide, as seedlings, trees and branches spread out on every side’.

' ... Vasy’s work from afar looked to be a watercolour to us. Her wonderful collaging technique was subtle and amazing. We had to look twice to realize it was all collage, with no watercolour. Vasy’s piece impressed us with the appropriateness of the media to represent the Australian landscape, ripped and cut pieces did it so well. We also noticed the possible political comment in the use of paper to represent it’s source, trees in a proud, almost heavenly scene, and the use of magazines suggested the newsworthiness of this topic. Congratulations Vasy for your work 'Stringbarks', winner of the 2D other media category. ...' Judge Sarah Crinall

The Odyssey
14cm X 14cm each

Time and place change. From the known to the unknown the diaspora scatter. This 4 part collage depicts the modern day odyssey… A migrant’s soul searching journey, questioning what and where is home. Finally, establishing and accepting a new existence.

Inspired by the poem ‘Ithaca Now’ by Anastasia Gessa-Liveriadis

‘…Odysseus, your island today has no bounds in a world that rapidly is getting very small. My homesick hero cast your eyes around and in your soul embrace the whole world.’
